Presenting Data Visually

A Chart represents data as symbols, bars, lines or slices of a pie. The data can be tabular (rows and columns in a table), functions (a collection of all ordered pairs, or curve mapping) or structural.

People read charts better than they read columns of data. A chart should tell the story of this data as quickly a possible without a lot of distractions. This lesson demonstrates how to create and format a Chart with the Chart Tools (Chart Layout and Chart Design) so that the data is easy to figure out and understand.

Start Microsoft Excel. When the Welcome screen appears, open a new, blank workbook.

What do you see from the top of the screen? Is there a Home Ribbon? And the Insert, Page Layout, Formulas, Data. Review and View Ribbons as well? Yes.

If your screen looks similar to the example on this page, then you are ready to get started.
